Narendra Modi.
The Supreme Court gave a historic verdict on the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35-A. In its decision it upheld the sovereignty and integrity of India, which has always been cherished by every Indian.
PM Modi wrote, "Today the dreams of the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh are not dependent on the past, but on the possibilities of the future"The Supreme Court is absolutely right in saying that the decision taken on 5 August 2019 was taken with the aim of enhancing constitutional integration and not with the aim of disintegration. He also admitted that the nature of Article 370 was not permanent. The beautiful and serene valleys and snow-clad mountains of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh have been mesmerizing every Indian for generations, but for many decades, many places in Jammu and Kashmir have witnessed violence and instability that is unimaginable.
At the time of independence the then political leadership had the option of making a fresh start for national unity, but instead decided to continue with the confused approach. This led to the neglect of national interests. I always had the belief that Jammu and Kashmir was not a political issue, but about fulfilling the aspirations of the society. Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee could have remained in the Nehru cabinet, yet he left the cabinet over the Kashmir issue and chose the difficult path ahead. He had to pay the price for this with his life, but due to his sacrifice, crores of Indians got emotionally connected to the Kashmir issue. Similarly, the effective message of ‘Insaniyat’, ‘Jamhooriyat’ and ‘Kashmiriyat’ given by Atal ji has always been a source of inspiration.
What happened in Jammu and Kashmir was a major betrayal of the nation and its people. Article 370 and 35-A were like big obstacles for Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. Due to these articles, distances were created between the people of the same nation. I was very clear that the people of Jammu and Kashmir want a life for their children, free from violence and uncertainty. While serving the people of Jammu and Kashmir, we have given priority to three things – understanding the concerns of the citizens, building mutual trust through the actions of the government and giving priority to continuous development.
Devastating floods hit Kashmir in 2014, causing widespread damage in the valley. In September 2014, I visited Srinagar to assess the situation and announced Rs 1,000 crore as special assistance. This sent a message that our government is sensitive towards helping the people there. I got the opportunity to meet the people of Jammu and Kashmir. During this period, one common thing emerged that people not only want development but also want freedom from the corruption that has been prevalent for decades. That year, I decided not to celebrate Diwali and stay there, in memory of those who lost their lives in Jammu and Kashmir. To further strengthen the development journey of Jammu and Kashmir, more than 150 visits of Union Ministers took place between May 2014 and March 2019. This is a record. The Special Package of 2015 was an important step towards meeting the development needs of Jammu and Kashmir.
